Adventure Editorial Review
"Harm's Way" is a fan-pleasing addition to the Star Trek: The Original Series universe. David Mack has captured the personalities of the characters perfectly, and the book reads like a lost episode of the show. The plot is well-conceived, with good pacing and an excellent concept. However, there are a few notable drawbacks. The use of Kang and Mara as antagonists for Kirk and his crew is somewhat underdeveloped, with their previous encounter not receiving much mention. This oversight ignores the lessons learned from that previous encounter and leaves the reader feeling that the characters need to re-learn everything from scratch. Additionally, the "gotcha" strategy employed by Kirk to defeat Kang is treated as a surprise to the reader as well, causing some frustration. The book also suffers from a long and predictable battle that becomes boring and overwhelms the story. While "Harm's Way" is a decent extension of the Vanguard series, it forces some of the TOS crew out of their comfort zone and the interactions between characters feel forced and not believable.
