- Freud's Mass Psychology and Self Analysis, first published in 1921, is a pioneering work in its field that examines a social phenomenon whose influence was increasing at the beginning of the 20th century and the mechanisms of the political mass: What kind of mechanisms are the populist and demagogic sensitivities of the masses based on? Why are the masses sensitive to hypnotic seduction by charismatic leaders? Why do the masses tend to behave unconsciously, irrationally and violently? What is the origin of demagogy and how does it work? While Freud explored ways to answer these and similar questions through psychoanalysis, he progressed on an interdisciplinary line and focused on anthropology, political psychology and cultural theory, as well as evolutionary and social perspectives; He incorporates the existing psychological interpretations of crowds into a basic psychological system by making use of the observations and findings of his predecessors such as Friedrich Nietzsche, Karl Marx, William McDougall or Gustave Le Bon. Mass Psychology and Self Analysis, which was written between the two world wars and would later guide the empirical social research of the Frankfurt School, has an important place in the literature as it sheds light on the mass psychology of fascism, whose footsteps are increasing in Europe, and draws attention to the dangers of the mass.
